Project Safe Neighborhoods:

NORTH HAVEN MAN SENTENCED TO NEARLY 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR ILLEGAL GUN SALE

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that ORBE ORTIZ, 28, of Pine River Road, North Haven, Connecticut, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to 118 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release.  On October 19, 2007, ORTIZ pleaded guilty to knowingly selling a firearm to a person known to be a convicted felon.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, on December 8, 2006, Ortiz sold a MAC-10 semi-automatic firearm to a person known to him to be a convicted felon.  Federal law makes it unlawful to sell or otherwise dispose of a firearm to certain persons, including convicted felons, fugitives, drug users, and illegal aliens.  ORTIZ also is a convicted felon.

This matter was investigated by members of the Safe Streets Task Force, notably the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Milford Police Department.  This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney John A. Marrella.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents in Connecticut’s cities.  Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
