MILFORD MAN INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL FIREARM POSSESSION
Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury has returned an Indictment charging RAUL SUNER, also known as “Sunny,” 47, of Milford, with possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. The Indictment was returned today.
The Indictment alleges that, on March 4, 2008, SUNER knowingly possessed a Browning 9mm semi-automatic pistol bearing an obliterated serial number. The Indictment further alleges that SUNER has been convicted of several felonies in the State of Connecticut Superior Court.
It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.
SUNER has been detained since his arrest on March 6, 2008.
If convicted, SUNER faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000.
U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
This matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Connecticut State Police. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Michael J. Gustafson and Raymond F. Miller.
